ULEAD 2020- the Uganda adventure
I will never forget the first time I was on a plane headed for Africa in 1988. The shock and reality of traveling halfway around the world really hit me half way through the flight. I remember it clearly, I was sitting in the bulkhead watching a mind numbing movie when it hit me and fear set in. Not only was I going to Africa, I was MOVING to Africa. Thoughts started creeping into my mind “What if I hate it? What if they hate me? What if I don’t fit in? What if I can’t communicate? Will I be safe?”. Fear can be a good thing when we don’t let it take us over and paralyze us from leaning into our dreams.
When we finally landed after what felt like four decades on the plane, I looked out the window and saw a mysterious and magical place that I would now call home. I instantly fell in love and felt at home. As I deplaned, I was overcome by the delicious uniquely smoky and earthy smell of Africa. Now I long for that land, that smell and most of all the incredible people.
For 5 years I have been dreaming of taking other women to experience Africa. The idea bubbled to the surface when I owned a yoga studio and saw an opportunity to of Yoga on the Nile. Now a bigger dream has emerged of connecting women leaders here in the US to women leaders in Uganda where we can powerfully serve and learn from each other.
Over the past few years I have been so inspired by the many women I coached. Women who are leaders, who inspired, who serve and have extraordinary ideas and gift to share with the world. Women who are committed to their work, families and community living powerful lives. These women want to learn, grow and leave the world a better place, making a difference in other’s lives through service, contribution, teaching and loving.
This 6 month unique leadership journey offers the perfect blend of self-exploration, service and adventure. First, we work on OurselvesThe journey starts with a five-month of embracing our own brilliance as leaders. Then we take a deep dive into what it means to be of service and focus on the gap between who we are today and who we strive to be.
I see it all the time, women at the peak of life and career, climbing higher with a calling to profoundly serve. At the same time, I see over and over again the common theme and behaviors that tend to hold them back. The truth is we all have these, regardless of where we are in our lives, whether in the C suite, business owner, an employee or a stay at home Mom with kids. These patterns become the heavy ropes that pull us off the peak.
These ropes might look like:
- People pleasing
- Working to exhaustion trying to do it all
- Comparing ourselves with others
- Feeling like a fraud or imposter
- Fear of looking too aggressive, “bitchy” or foolish
- Avoiding challenging conversations or saying “NO”
- Perfectionism- looking for the “right answer”, having it all handled
First, we release our ropes and step more powerfully into our own leadership so that we can guide others because guess what? The women in Africa face the SAME THINGS!
Then, we head to Uganda. I believe meeting people where they are and serve in the communities which is the most powerful way to give back.
Here are a few highlights this RARE and UNIQUE experience:
- Create a personal and professional project individually and as a group
- Work side by side the women – learning as much from them as they learn from us because we are all teachers learning from each other.
- Hands on experience making coffee
- Animal husbandry
- Health care and working with a midwife
- Small business
- You will live with a family in a small village on the river Nile
- Partner with Street Business school to coach and mentor the alumni business program
This life changing leadership program is the perfect blend of personal skill, service and adventure that will stay with you forever. You will return home with a heart full of practical wisdom and experience that will serve you in anything you dream to do.
